Our
Why

The Importance of acknowledging the overlap between LGBTQ+ Pride and Juneteenth celebrations, as well as other marginalized communities, is essential for fostering a sense of solidarity and inclusivity.

Homer Pride's mission is to honor the rich tapestry of identities within our community by acknowledging the intersectionality between LGBTQ+ experiences and the commemoration of Juneteenth, alongside other marginalized communities. We recognize the historical context of both struggles for liberation and equality, understanding that unity in diversity is essential for fostering solidarity and achieving social change. Through embracing shared experiences and common goals, we aim to build coalitions, amplify voices, and advocate for a more inclusive and equitable society where all individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered.

Homer Pride invites you to celebrate the journey towards freedom, equity, and justice, by standing together in unity beside us as we continue to strive for a brighter and more inclusive future for all.

The Evolution of the Liberation Celebration

In 2021, Homer Pride began using the name Liberation Celebration for its annual outdoor family friendly gathering. The name reflected a desire to create space for a broader vision of community—one that honored not only LGBTQ+ pride, but also the interconnected struggles and triumphs of other historically marginalized communities.

Over time, what began as a Community Walk ending with a celebration single event has continued to grow.

As volunteers, community partners, and local organizations became involved, Homer Pride expanded from hosting one day annual gathering to coordinating a season of community programming throughout June. Educational workshops, social gatherings, performances, family activities, collaborative events, and opportunities for advocacy and connection all became part of the celebration.

Today, the Liberation Celebration represents more than a single day. It is a month-long season of visibility, education, joy, community care, and collective liberation.

While Homer Pride continues to host and coordinate many of these opportunities, we also celebrate the growing number of community partners, businesses, organizations, and individuals who contribute events and activities that help make June a time of connection and belonging for many people in our community.

Together, these events create a season of community programming rooted in the belief that liberation is not a single gathering, but an ongoing practice of showing up for one another.

June in Homer is a season of community gatherings, connection, and celebration. What does it mean to you?
